Going above and beyond

A special shoutout to Sheryl Hamilton, who has gone above and beyond her normal duties as a cook at Grafton Primary School. As part of World Bee Day, the BD Together teams have organised a range of activities to get our school teams and the children involved in the day, and to raise awareness of the importance of bees. Sheryl has shown real enthusiasm for the day, getting involved in many ways.

When our Great Bee Bake Off competition was announced, Sheryl didn’t think her cake decorating skills were quite up to entering a baking competition, but the school disagreed! Knowing that it was all for a good cause, as the cakes would be raffled for charity, Sheryl agreed to have a go. And as you can see from the photo, she made an amazing bee cake!

The whole school supported the baking competition, with posters to promote the event and every class in the school being given a packet of raffle tickets to sell to the parents. Sheryl generously announced that if she wins 1st,2nd or 3rd place she will donate her prize to the school.

In addition, Sheryl set up a class with the ARP (specialist provision) children in the school and, out of her own pocket, supplied seeds and plants for the children to grow their own vegetables, so they can see first hand how some foods are grown, which they will then be able to eat with their school lunches in a few weeks time!

Sheryl has done all this in addition to her daily duties as cook, producing nutritious and tasty school lunches for the children every day, and ensuring that she and her team adhere to consistently high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene practices. This was recognised this week when the team was awarded a 5 Star Food Hygiene Rating by the Food Standards Agency.

Well done Sheryl – we are proud that you are part of the BD family!
