BD Together is committed to working closely with our schools to provide a catering service tailored to the needs of each school, to ensure we serve nutritious meals the children love, and in doing so, maximise meal uptake.
In preparation for the new school year beginning in September, we are currently liaising with our schools as we develop the menus we will be serving to ensure they meet the individual needs of the school and its children. We do not assume that ‘one menu fits all’ and tailor our menus for each individual school, according to their demographic and healthy eating food plans.
As well as serving meals that we know the children will enjoy, our menus follow Silver Food for Life standards and the Eatwell Guide. We are committed to providing the following every day:
- Slow release, complex carbohydrates in all our dishes
- Meat-free meal options
- Unlimited vegetables and salad
- Limited sugar and refined carbs
- Healthier alternatives to junk food
- Being smart about fats
- Making fruit and vegetables more appealing
Our operations managers are currently liaising directly with each school to discuss suggested three-week menus and will then adjust them according to any feedback and special requests they receive. If requested, they will also present the menus to School Councils to get input directly from the children themselves and provide tasting sessions. The final menus will be agreed before the end of term, giving us and the schools plenty of time to promote our school meals service to the parents, carers and children.
